I love fantasy books. Right now I’m reading a great book called the Dao of Magic (sounds like non-fiction, but it’s a great fiction novel), which is about someone of a far higher power crash-landing on a planet with a far lower power and basically trying to figure everything out.
And it always gets me thinking about the real power that we do have. Just like on this planet in this novel, people all around us have no idea the power they wield, and so they idly create all sorts of negative things for themselves because they literally don’t know any better.
No, maybe we can’t start fires with our mind or go flying around, but I still see it as a form of magic.
If I want something in the moment, I can nearly always create that change within a few minutes.
For example, on vacation we went to a very popular seafood buffet one night for dinner. The line was huge— literally out the door— and once we got into the restaurant itself, it was uncomfortably warm.
So I thought, “What do I want?” And I decided, “I want to get a table quickly and have it be nice and cool.” Within about 2 minutes of this thought, we were indeed headed towards a table, and for whatever reason the place we were seated was indeed cool, to the point that Christine commented that I had done too good of a job, because she was now cold. ?
Seem a bit mundane? Here’s a second example:
At the end of that same dinner, our family friend who went along put everything on her card for simplicity’s sake, but was calculating how much we all owed her. Now, call it selfish but she had mentioned before vacation that she might cover one dinner for all of us. So I decided I’d like this dinner to be the one, even though it seemed unlikely since she was figuring out what we owed her.
Well, once we got back to the hotel, Christine received a text from her saying not to worry about it: we didn’t owe her anything.
Or how about a final example? Literally a little over a week before vacation, this same family friend broke her leg. It looked pretty bad, and there was talk of her not going on vacation because she literally couldn’t put any pressure on it. Now unfortunately if she didn’t go, it was unlikely any of us would go because she was covering a lot of the cost for my mother to go on this trip, and I hadn’t budgeted to cover an extra person.
It looked unlikely, because she had been telling Christine how she didn’t really want to go anyway and it wasn’t worth it.
Despite all this I decided that she’d go, and again literally the next day she let us all know she was going to come on the trip.
That’s just a handful of examples from the last week or so. There are more but I don’t want to bore you. But the point is that this is my everyday reality. Reality says one thing, I say, “No, I want this instead,” and reality conforms to meet my expectation.
Of course there are bigger ones as well, but these are just little, everyday examples.
Is this how you live your life? Do you live it magically, conforming reality to your will as you go along? Or are you buffeted by the circumstances of life, feeling largely powerless?
This is what I mean about all of us having access to magic, but most people not realizing that they do. But I do, and I use it on a daily basis to get what I want in life. These changes often happen within minutes of my choosing them.
If this isn’t yet your life, then you now know what is possible. Imagine how you could sway the small little everyday situations of life in your favor, just with a bit of will. Imagine the changes you could create.
