Someone messaged me on Reddit the other day about some issues they were having with overcoming resistance. Sometimes I’m active on the r/lawofattraction subreddit, and had posted about mindfulness at some point a while ago, and this person had found my post.
So, I wrote out a pretty lengthy response as I tend to do, and thought that it could be of help to my readers as well, so am adapting it here.
Here’s the little bug in most people’s understanding: resistance isn’t a problem. Yes, it can cause your manifestations to be blocked for a while, but never permanently. And, it only does that if you make a big deal out of the resistance and keep focusing on it.
Your natural state is one of perfection and peace. So when this resistance comes up, just see if you can recognize it as just a temporary cloud over the perfection of who you are. The resistance isn’t a problem, so don’t see it as such. It’s just something that’s here in the moment.
But it’s also common to make this into a sort of practice to get rid of resistance. And you’re doing that because you believe that you need your manifestation to make you happy, and this resistance is blocking your manifestation, so in a sense you believe this resistance is blocking your happiness.
This is a tricky little part of the LOA, but vitally important, and something most people miss. Your manifestation won’t make you happy. You have to honestly and sincerely become happy now even without that thing, and without the motivation of trying to get that thing (like, “If I am happy now, then I can get it, so I guess I’ll try to be happy”).
I manifested many things without being happy first, and let me tell you it wasn’t pleasant. I manifested jobs, tons of money, and all the rest without being happy first. And I was never an ounce happier as a result, perhaps even the opposite. Now I’m working on actually doing it the right way, of being happy and then allowing all I want to come to me. And it’s far less stressful.
So don’t see any of this as a way to get what you want. See it as a way to be happy, to uncover the happiness you are, and then recognize that everything you want will come to you in the end, but only when you’re in the emotional state that will allow it in.
If you do that, then the resistance doesn’t become such a big deal. It’s just something that is temporarily covering over that happiness, probably due to some incorrect or illusory thinking. But it’s OK, because it’s here and everything that’s here is OK.
None of this implies you should give up on your desire. It’s a really tough balance to keep: some of the more “spiritual” or non-dual teachers will focus entirely on this aspect of peace and happiness in the moment, and totally ignore the desires. Other teachers will focus too much on the desire, to the detriment of happiness in the moment.
You want what you want, and that’s good. But let it be a creation of joy, not a creation of need. Become happy first, then move towards what you want, don’t use these methods to try to get what you want to fulfill some perceived need.
