Have you tried using the law of attraction, but gotten nothing more than frustration? Perhaps you’ve received sporadic results at best, but nothing to really suggest that you can make this a normal part of your life.
If this is you, you are likely neglecting the one thing that causes the law of attraction to work. What is it I’m referring to? Simply, the necessity of surrendering to God.
The Problem: Attachment to Your Desires
Easily the #1 problem for those who are attempting to practice the law of attraction is being attached to their desires.
It seems ridiculous, because you would think, “This is my desire, it is what I want, so of course I’m attached.” But in the law of attraction, attachment to your desires is the quickest way to ruin any chance of it manifesting in your life.
An Issue of Perception
Why? It’s all about your orientation to the desire. When you imagine that you need the desire in order to be happy, you are emanating a great sense of lack.
You don’t need anything to be happy. Better stated, the only thing you need is God—to rediscover that light within yourself that constantly shines—to unveil your heart to what is really Real in the world. A new car, a better job, or a million dollars can’t provide happiness; not soul-level happiness, anyway.
For the soul to be satisfied, it needs an authentic spiritual connection with The Real—with Truth—with God.
To believe that you need these other things is just a lie of the false ego self, a lie of insecurity and separation from who you really are.
None of that is meant to guilt you into dropping your desires. It’s okay, and natural, to desire things. But again, the difference is your orientation. Do you seek the desire out of a sense of need, or simply for the sake of the desire itself? Are you approaching the desire from a place of lack, or from a place of fullness?
The Law of Attraction Responds to Your Inner State
A common misunderstanding is that the law of attraction responds to your thoughts. That’s actually not true. It seems to be true because thoughts are also a manifestation of the same thing: your inner state.
That’s why you could desire more money, but approach it from a lack orientation, and therefore get the exact opposite. there’s no way that God could, or would, give the exact opposite of what you are really asking for internally.
However, you can also ask for more money from a place of fullness and joy. When this happens, God responds in kind, giving you even more fullness and joy, in the form of financial abundance, and much more besides.
So when you are trying to manifest your desire, it is not enough to constantly think about it in positive, nice-sounding terms. It’s not enough to constantly repeat affirmations and create vision boards.
what’s needed is a real change of your own inner state. What you’ve been given already is a manifestation of your inner state as it is right now, or how it is on average. If you tend to be a person who focuses on lack, then all you can make room for in your life is lack.
The Solution: Surrendering to God
So we know the problem: you know what you want, but you’re not really fostering the best inner state to make room for that desire to become reality.
It’s sort of like trying to grow a plant. You might have a seed, but if you don’t give it the things it needs to survive, it won’t grow into a plant.
If you try to plant the seed in only shallow soil, it won’t survive. If you only give it occasional water, it won’t survive. And if you don’t allow it to receive light, it, again, won’t survive. You have the right seed, but not the right conditions.
The results you get in life are the outward proof of your inner state. It shows what seeds you planted, and how you took care of those seeds. If you don’t like the plants you get, then you might want to plant different seeds, and take care of them appropriately.
Obviously, the thing to do is to change the inner state—to plant different seeds. But how do we do this?
The short answer is, by constantly living a life of surrender to God. Yes, I said the short answer, but it’s not necessarily the easy answer.
You see, when you allow yourself to begin surrendering to God in your day-to-day life, it changes you from the inside out. You begin to unveil your heart to the beauty of that spiritual Truth. You look to God for the provision of your needs, not to outward circumstances, which could never help in the first place. The fullness of God becomes your fullness, and thus you begin to manifest very different results in life.
It’s a Journey
The problem is that many people come to the law of attraction believing it will be an easy thing to get anything they want. Most of the blame falls onto those who market it as a quick fix, as the solution to all of your life’s concerns. But it also falls onto those who believe that there is a quick fix at all. It is wishful thinking.
If you look at the adherents of any religion, especially the mystical factions thereof, you see people who strive for years to trust more in God and learn how to surrender to Him. They realize the error of relying on the material world for happiness, and turn within to discover true fulfillment.
It’s not done over night. You can’t just flip a switch and now you are getting everything you want in life.
There are people who have success with the law of attraction almost immediately upon discovering it. Generally they succeed for a few reasons:
- They approach it with an attitude of playfulness and fun
- They put enough trust in the process that they can stop doubting that what they want is possible
- They try it on something small, that really doesn’t matter to them
- They already have some years of spiritual growth under their belt, so they are able to detach from the end result, because they realize the importance of surrendering to God
Notice in all the points above, our hypothetical individual has an inner state that is conducive of positive results with the law of attraction.
- A state of playfulness and fun is a perfect state for making the law of attraction work. You aren’t worried about the end result, so there’s plenty of room for it to come to you.
- A lot of times, when we try something new, we can suspend all doubt, at least temporarily. This allows your desire to be manifested, especially if it is something small (see below).
- Manifesting something small is incredibly easier than something that really matters to you. In fact, most people complain that they can manifest small things, but have no success when attempting to manifest something more important. The reason? Of course, because they’re attached.
- If they already have some spiritual growth, then of course developing the appropriate state for the desire to manifest will be trivial.
So as you see above, it is generally easy to do if the desire is small enough that you can believe it, or simply not care about it. But people are drawn to the law of attraction not because they can manifest $5 on command, but because they really want something important to them to manifest in their life.
Evaluate the Beliefs of Your Subconscious Mind
Your own subconscious beliefs could be holding you back as well. Your thoughts are largely a manifestation of the beliefs held by your subconscious mind. If your thoughts directly affect your inner state, and your thoughts arise from your subconscious beliefs, then they can have a substantial effect on your success with the law of attraction.
Changing such beliefs is a gradual process. You notice when you have a thought that matches one of your old, limiting beliefs, and you gently redirect it to the new, desired belief. It is something I often help people with through my spiritual coaching. I can help you to more easily and quickly change the limiting beliefs of your subconscious mind, and discover new, more effective ways of thinking and viewing the world.
Detaching from Your Desires
The most important thing to do is to detach from your desires. I mentioned above that attachment to your desires is the biggest problem for those who want to practice the law of attraction.
To be detached from your desires does not mean that you do not want them. It simply means that you don’t need them. It is truly freeing to be able to approach your desires with detachment, not with need. You will be open to seeing if something even better manifests instead, because quite often, we simply don’t know what the best thing is for us.
How to Surrender to God
Surrendering to God will help with all the above. It will help you to create the perfect inner state to manifest your desires in life, because you are no longer fearful about material things. It will help you to gradually change your subconscious beliefs, because your old fear-based beliefs will be neutralized over time, when you refuse to acknowledge them anymore. It can help you to be open to manifesting larger things in life, because you will see everything from a perspective of fullness, not of lack. Finally, it will allow you to detach from your desires, because you realize you no longer need them, but you simply desire them.
So how do you actually surrender? The first thing I would recommend doing is to look for the ways that God is working in your life. See every positive experience as a blessing, and every negative experience as a sign of God pointing out your own resistance. Observe the synchronicity that is present in your life.
After a few days of doing this, you will be convinced that God is walking with you every step of the way. There is never a moment that God is not with you. When you realize this, it becomes much easier to start surrendering to God.
Secondly, start to practice mindfulness of your own inner state. Realize that you don’t have to believe your thoughts. When a thought comes up you don’t like, or that doesn’t feel good to you, simply be mindful of it. Simply observe it, allowing it to be as it is. A thought starved of belief and engagement will quickly dissolve.
If your mind is like a garden, it is up to you to decide which seeds are allowed to be planted. Refuse to allow bad seeds by not focusing on negative thoughts and fears that arise. Allow good seeds to be planted by giving more attention to your positive thoughts.
You can’t always control your thoughts, but you can control your focus. It will be hard at first, but the more you exercise your mental focus, the easier it will become.
Do not resist the negative thoughts. It is a very fine line between being mindful of your negative thoughts, and actually resisting them. Simply sit in stillness and let them be what they are. Neither believe them, nor resist them. Neither cling to them, nor push them away. When a thought is ignored, it will go of its own accord.
As you do this, you will sense a center of peace beneath the storm of negative thoughts. As you release the hold of your negative thoughts over you, that peace will begin to come to the forefront, and shine through into your everyday life. Then you will truly begin to notice life going better for you. The outer will be, as always, a reflection of the inner. You will have outward abundance, just as you have inward abundance. But the difference will be, you won’t care so much anymore, because you already have it inside yourself. The neediness you once felt will fall away, and instead you will have lasting fulfillment, to which the positive things of life are drawn like a magnet. That is when you’ve mastered the law of attraction, and learned the art of surrendering to God.
So, what do you think? Are you making the mistake of being too attached to your desires? How have you learned to become more detached? What is your experience with surrendering to God? Please comment below and tell about your own experience.
10 Reasons You Aren't Getting Results with the Law of Attraction

I’ve found that spiritual linkage to a path, skill set, or concept allows me to remove myself from attachment to the outcome, and how the end result looks. I mess myself up from time to time; we all do, but I’ve found that allowing my divine self to guide the process works. Sense I knew that my attachment/focus personality was a detriment, to the process, I attached it to the ways in which I wanted to impact the world after discerning what energetically attracted me. All throughout school to obtain my second masters, my focus has been on walking my higher path, even passing up jobs which would have increased my money flow in the short-term, but detracted from it. I have figured out that the size, shape, look and the concreteness of my outcomes don’t matter. However, the way in which I apply myself to them does. I focus on application of spirituality and skill to my path. I have yet to have the money to live like a man in his 30s with my level of development should be living, and yes, this has been, and is still a little embarrassing to me. And yes, that is unspiritual like… or, maybe it’s just human. However, I’ve never failed to find the abundance to take care of essentials. Even when I was working fulltime that was still the case, which taught me that it is not the job, but the path. The right spiritual path is the best way to create that flow of abundance and prosperity. Once you get on that, the Co-Creation part begins; God will conspire with you to produce it through a variety of channels, which is why I I am careful not to try to judge how the outcome will be presented to me. Now of course, if I really desire something, then I ask for it, but I keep my mind open with the all this but something better statement, or something similar to make room for my higher self to do divine work with God.
Justin
Justin,
I so agree about focusing on walking your higher path, and sometimes ignoring things that might logically look advantageous, but really aren’t a match to you. You have to know yourself and what is on your path, and what isn’t. And God will guide you to those things as well.
I also agree about not getting too specific. If you get too specific about what you want, well, it can really block the process. The LOA responds to emotions, not to words or thoughts, as I said.

Hi Abdullah,
Many people have a misconception when it comes to the Law of Attraction. They focus so hard on a brand new red car for instance, but never get it. Why? Because it is too much of a force of energy. Also because they don’t believe in any spirituality.
When we want something, we cannot be so specific. “Let go and let God” is a popular saying that holds so much wisdom. Now this does not happen overnight….but when we do and ask in a “playful” fashion like you have mentioned, things happen. I find that I get more than I ever dreamed of or can imagine when asking this way.
There were so many things that happened in my life so far that were amazing when I meditated and prayed. If we understand God knows us more than we will ever know ourselves, we will lead a wonderful life.
It is, however, an ever going process. One that we need to practice every day. I tried every which way in the past and came full circle back to God. That is where things do happen.
Thank you for a lovely post.

Hi Donna,
Thanks so much for your comment. I agree 100% with what you said.
I like to see life as a conversation with God. If God is our best friend, or even, as some mystics have put it, our beloved, then He delights in making us happy, as long as we are remembering Him. So what you say is so true, that if you just let go, and trust in God to provide what we need, we will receive unimaginable blessings.
You’re right about trying to force manifestation not being the right way at all. It’s more of an allowing, a letting go, a giving in, a surrendering. It’s a passive process. It’s a give and take.
Abdullah
My favorite bible story is that of Job. He goes throught so many horrible events and loses everything but in the end, when he finally stops asking why, he is delivered unimaginable gifts and glory. Remembering that God created us and everything and thus knows us and everything better than we do, it isnt hard to remember that God is in control and he will always give us exactly what we want and need. This is the truth.
Hey Rick,
It’s so true, I agree. Thanks so much for your great comment.

Absolutely beautifully written. This was exactly what I needed today! Thank you for your post! ❤️????????
Thanks so much! I really appreciate your comment, and am glad my post helped. 🙂
Just wanted to ask a question, no judgements at all, but I noticed that the writer of the post and creator of this blog is a satanist. Just curious to know how the “surrendering to God” factored in to LOA practices, if this is the case? Thanks.

Great read – I feel Im on track till I do not see a physical/material result of what I set out for. I feel I get tangled and resistant once it starts manifesting. Then the resistance materialises and it “slips out” right when it is within reach, it is such a strong pattern that I have a long history of stuff that “slipped out when it was almost close enough to touch”.
I feel when it starts materializing, I get bogged down by the ground realities and how things can go horribly wrong or what the negative consequences could be. Also the fear of losing it rears its head.
Now I know what to do, I just need to apply it.
Thank you for sharing your perspective
You put into exact words what happens to me. Any luck with dealing with it?
Hi @SSW,
If you’re struggling with that, I highly recommend my online class, 10 Essential Keys to Make the Law of Attraction Work for You. It describes in detail how to deal with resistance, among other topics as well. Let me know if you have any questions. 🙂

Ah! It does get a bit tricky, doesn’t it? Let’s not forgot prarabdha karma (if you believe in karma this is the karma that cannot be changed), where you’re at in your spiritual journey (what’s important changes as we evolve) and the interplay of collective consciousness as a whole. Lastly, if you have an Eastern belief system as I do, we are all the Self in these various forms and none of it ultimately matters anyway……..it’s all just a play of consciousness 🙂
I really love (and believe in) the focus of this article: surrendering to God with an attitude of gratitude, a joyful heart and detachment. No problem there. What baffles me, however, is the many people I can think (yes, in my personal circle even) of who do not believe in God, who have a negative attitude yet still manifest a lot of abundance in their lives via their work, relationships and $. So could somebody please explain that?
Hi @nandismith:disqus. I appreciate your comment.
Well the thing is, it doesn’t take a literal belief in God or Goddess to manifest. Just some trust in something greater, or in the goodness of life itself.
Life is complex. Someone can have a very high vibration in regards to money, while having a very low one in other areas of life. Therefore it can look like they are an angry person and yet have lots of money.
The Universe doesn’t care about what someone believes. It just cares about their vibration on any given topic.
Similarly just because you are a happy person, doesn’t necessarily mean that you will get all the good things in the world. it’s a little more complicated than that.
Before bed yesterday I asked God several questions. I was sad and depressed and today I found several of your articles about how to surrender to God, and if God are talking to you. I say thank you to God and to you 🙂 he answered.
Hi Pär, I’m so glad that you found value in my posts! I do believe that God speaks to us, all the time. We have only but to listen. Life always finds a way to communicate with us.
